“We do not see things as they are, we see them as we are” - Talmudic text
My approach to coaching Mental Fitness is very concrete, practical, and straightforward. No mumbo-jumbo, unproven or weird theories and practices, or complex programs designed to make you feel like you must be doing something "important". In fact, I am a big fan or radical simplicity.
The principles and techniques I teach and use in coaching have been honed over decades of personal experimentation and learning. There is nothing you need to believe in, in order to practice. Being an open-minded skeptic is ideal. Everything you learn is evidence-based, meaning when you experience results you use that evidence to refine your approach, develop more confidence in the process, and keep going.
The foundation of Mental Fitness is strengthening your awareness by practicing paying attention. Awareness helps you to see clearly what is going on. What is going on is your experience of reality. Your experience of reality is conditioned by multiple factors such as your biology, thoughts, emotions, memories of past experiences, cultural conditionings, and mental and behavioral habits. For better and worse, these factors determine how you react to inner and outer triggers –usually automatically and non-consciously. Once you are able to notice your reactions in real time, and how they often keep you trapped in limited and unhelpful ways of thinking, being, and acting (what we call "suffering"), you are set to begin applying countermeasures. Thus, countermeasures begin with a desire to put an end to self-generated suffering, and realize your full potential. At that point you are on a journey without a fixed destination, and your success depends on your ability and willingness to apply proven principles and techniques, practicing consistently, and reflecting continuously on the results of your practice.
